An engineering business is established in Gladstone

MEA's history began in 1992, when father-and-son team Brian and Darren Whelan established a small engineering and fabrication business in Central Gladstone. From modest beginnings, the company focused on supporting the Sugar, Mining and Mineral Processing industries that formed an important part of Central Queensland's industrial base.

The business quickly developed a reputation for quality workmanship, practical engineering and dependable delivery. Early work ranged from the fabrication of critical plant components through to mechanical maintenance and shutdown support, establishing long-term relationships with major industrial operators throughout the Gladstone region.

Expansion into Toolooa

As the business continued to grow, increasing project size and workshop demand led to the development of a larger purpose-built facility in Toolooa, Gladstone. The company relocated to the new facility in 1998, significantly increasing its fabrication, mechanical and project delivery capabilities.

The additional capacity enabled the business to undertake larger and more technically demanding projects while securing long-term mechanical maintenance work with major operators including Queensland Alumina Limited and Boyne Smelters Limited. Significant projects during this period included the complete rebuild of JOY 12CM12 underground continuous miners and the fabrication and installation of eight alumina storage bins for the Boyne Smelters Expansion Project.

Mechanical Engineers Australia is formed

Following the retirement of co-founder Brian Whelan in 2003, Darren Whelan continued the business under the name Mechanical Engineers Australia (MEA). The new identity reflected the company's progression from a fabrication-focused operation into a broader mechanical engineering and manufacturing business.

Operating from the Toolooa facility, MEA increasingly focused on technically complex equipment and projects for the Mining, Power Generation, Mineral Processing and major infrastructure sectors. The company expanded its engineering, project management, fabrication and mechanical capabilities and became involved in major Queensland developments, including Expansion 2 of the Rio Tinto Yarwun Alumina Refinery and the manufacture of major marine structures for the Curtis Island LNG development.

Engineering and manufacturing complex industrial equipment

Today, MEA provides integrated engineering, manufacturing, refurbishment and assembly services for critical industrial equipment. Our work ranges from one-off replacement components and asset refurbishments through to complete mechanical assemblies and major engineered equipment.

Our experience includes dragline equipment, pulveriser mills, logwasher assemblies, gearboxes, pressure equipment, heavy structural assemblies and specialised mechanical components. These projects combine engineering, fabrication, machining, welding, inspection, testing and final assembly under controlled quality systems.

Supporting our Australian engineering and manufacturing capability is a well-established international supply network developed over more than 20 years. This gives MEA access to specialist CNC machining, gear cutting, open and closed-die forging, investment and centrifugal casting, heat treatment, flame hardening and nitriding capabilities.

By combining local engineering, project management and quality control with specialist manufacturing resources, MEA can deliver complete mechanical solutions from initial site measurement and design through to manufacture, assembly, testing and site installation.
