Dragline IBS Rope Mechanical Tensioners.
Dragline Intermediate Boom Suspension (IBS) ropes support the boom at an intermediate point, reducing boom deflection and distributing structural loads more evenly. Mechanical tensioners are used to apply, balance and maintain the required rope pre-tension. They must provide sufficient adjustment, resist vibration and cyclic loading, prevent loosening, and allow safe inspection and re-tensioning. Correct and equal tension between both ropes is critical to prevent uneven boom loading, excessive wear and fatigue damage.
MEA has designed and manufactured IBS rope mechanical tensioners for draglines internationally for more than 30 years. Our proven three-stage delivery process ensures each tensioner is accurately designed, manufactured and installed for the specific dragline. As IBS tensioners are installed in a difficult-access section of the boom, accurate measurement and fitment are critical. MEA's process minimises installation risk and ensures each assembly is ready for site conditions.

Engineered in the details.
MEA tensioners are manufactured from high-grade materials using controlled fabrication and machining procedures. Eyebolts, links and mating nuts are fully forged, stress relieved and finish machined before receiving a Molly Bond 1xP1 dry-film lubricant and corrosion-protection coating. Housing plates are 100 percent ultrasonically tested, welded by qualified personnel and thermally stress relieved before final bore machining.
All housings and torque plates are abrasive grit blasted and protective coated by MEA before final mechanical assembly. Completed tensioners are supplied in purpose-built timber crates containing the tensioner assemblies, boom pins where required and dedicated operator tool kits.
MEA also developed the IBS split-nut arrangement, which allows safer removal, adjustment and maintenance after the tensioner has been installed. The split-nut design reduces the risk of nuts seizing onto the eyebolt, improving both maintainability and operator safety.
Each tensioner is supplied with a dedicated operator tool kit containing a hydraulic hand pump and hoses, adjustment C-spanners, split-nut wrench, multi-stage adjustment studs and a hard copy of the operation and maintenance manual. Keeping all required equipment with the tensioners on the boom allows maintenance teams to complete adjustment and inspection tasks quickly and efficiently.
Compatible with synthetic fibre IBS ropes.
Over the past 10 years, draglines have increasingly adopted synthetic fibre IBS ropes as an alternative to traditional steel wire ropes. MEA works closely with Bekaert to provide complete IBS pendant solutions, combining Bekaert's synthetic fibre rope technology with MEA's engineered mechanical tensioners, fittings and installation support. This coordinated approach ensures each site receives a complete, fit-for-purpose IBS rope package with reduced fitment risk and reliable on-site performance.
