Rotary Coal Bath Separators.

Purpose & operational requirements

Rotary coal bath separators are used in coal handling and preparation plants to separate coal from heavier waste material using a controlled-density medium. As the rotating drum moves the feed through the bath, lower-density coal floats and is discharged as product, while higher-density rock and reject material sinks and is removed separately, reducing ash and unwanted mineral content before downstream processing.

MEA scope of works

MEA has supported Kestrel Coal's CHPP rotary coal bath separator systems for more than 30 years, providing engineering, manufacturing and refurbishment services for their major mechanical components. A notable project involved the redesign and manufacture of the critical forged bath tyre rings, measuring approximately five metres in diameter, which support the separator drum and allow it to rotate on the trunnion roller assemblies.

MEA has also completed ongoing refurbishment and design improvements for Teska trunnion roller assemblies, thrust roller assemblies, paddle shaft assemblies, reject wear plates and protection grids. Our involvement across the separator's principal rotating, supporting and wear components enables accurate control of mating dimensions, alignment and component interfaces, helping to improve operating reliability, reduce premature wear and maintain efficient separator performance.
