
Dragline swing motor turrets support and accurately position the swing motors, gearcases and associated drive components that rotate the machinery house around the tub. During operation, multiple swing drives work together through the swing pinions and large swing rack to control the dragline's rotation when positioning the bucket, dumping material and returning for the next cycle.
The turrets must maintain precise drive alignment and withstand continuous cyclic torque, vibration and reversing loads without excessive movement or distortion.
MEA was engaged by BMA's engineering team to design and manufacture four new upgraded swing motor turrets for a Marion 8050 dragline at Saraji Mine. The project formed part of an upgrade from existing 818-frame swing motors to larger 820-frame motors, requiring the new turrets to suit the revised motor mounting arrangement, shaft centreline, operating loads and surrounding installation constraints.
MEA developed an improved structural design using heavy-section plate and controlled fabrication procedures to provide the strength and rigidity required for continuous swing-duty service. Following welding, the turret assemblies were thermally stress relieved to reduce residual stresses and minimise distortion before the critical mounting faces and end interfaces were finish-machined to achieve the required alignment, dimensional accuracy and fit-up tolerances.
The new 820-frame motors were delivered to MEA's Gladstone workshop and trial-fitted to the completed turrets prior to site delivery, verifying the motor mounting pattern, clearances, mating interfaces and overall alignment under workshop conditions, reducing installation risk and avoiding fitment issues during the planned shutdown. Final dimensional inspections and quality checks were completed before the assemblies were prepared for transport and installation at Saraji Mine.
