
A gantry scaffold bogie system is a mobile access structure designed to travel through a tunnel and provide a stable elevated working platform for waterproofing, lining, services installation and general tunnel fit-out activities. The bogie-mounted gantry allows scaffold access to be repositioned efficiently as work progresses along the tunnel, reducing repeated dismantling and reassembly.
The system must support personnel, tools and materials while maintaining structural stability, controlled travel, accurate rail or wheel alignment and sufficient clearance from the tunnel walls, floor and surrounding construction activities.
MEA was engaged to undertake the complete design, manufacture, mechanical assembly and electrical fit-out of a travelling gantry scaffold bogie system for tunnel construction works. MEA engineers attended the Brisbane project site to complete 3D scanning, capture the tunnel geometry and assess the structural, clearance and operational requirements of the system.
The gantry scaffold bogies were engineered to provide a mobile elevated working platform for waterproofing and tunnel fit-out activities while allowing construction traffic to continue passing beneath or alongside the structure. MEA completed the structural fabrication, precision machining and mechanical assembly in-house, followed by the installation of the electrical drive and control systems, including remote pendant operation for controlled movement through the tunnel.
The completed systems delivered significant time and cost savings by reducing the need to repeatedly dismantle and relocate conventional scaffold structures, and their modular, reusable design allowed the bogie systems to be redeployed across multiple tunnel projects, including the Brisbane Airport Link and Sydney North Connex tunnel developments.
