Portal Reclaimer Chain Assemblies.

Purpose & operational requirements

Portal reclaimer systems recover bulk material from stockpiles and transfer it at a controlled rate to downstream conveyor and processing systems. A key part of the machine is the scraper chain, which is fitted with scraper flights and driven through the stockpile to pull material toward the reclaim conveyor for continuous removal and transfer.

MEA scope of works

MEA has worked closely with the Kestrel Coal team for more than 20 years to improve the reliability and service life of its portal reclaimer chains. Historically, the mine experienced frequent breakdowns caused by chain-link failures, pin wear and heavy abrasion across the reclaiming system.

Drawing on MEA's experience in materials engineering, metallurgy and heavy mechanical equipment, the chain design and material specifications were progressively upgraded. Chain-link pins and rollers are now manufactured from forged material and induction hardened to improve strength, wear resistance and fatigue performance, with a 1xP1 Molybond surface treatment applied for corrosion protection and a dry-film lubricating surface.

Chain-link strength was further increased by replacing Grade 250 plate with Bisalloy 450 wear-resistant steel. MEA has since manufactured and supplied multiple complete portal reclaimer chain assemblies, each approximately 160 metres long. These improvements have significantly extended chain service life, reduced premature failures and improved the overall reliability of Kestrel Coal's reclaiming operations.
