Gantry and tripper bogies support and guide the movement of large coal stacker and conveyor structures along their rail systems. The gantry bogies carry the main machine loads and enable the stacker to travel along the stockyard, while the tripper bogies support the travelling conveyor arrangement that transfers coal from the yard conveyor onto the stacker boom.
These assemblies must maintain accurate wheel alignment, distribute high structural and operating loads across the rails, and provide reliable travel under continuous duty, variable loading and harsh coal-handling conditions.
MEA was engaged by John Holland to undertake mechanical upgrades to internationally sourced tripper and gantry bogies for the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET). MEA managed the complete logistics package, including transport coordination, cranage, workshop scheduling and delivery back to site.
The bogies were transported to MEA's Gladstone workshop and unloaded onto the facility's hardstand for inspection and refurbishment. MEA's mechanical team removed the electric drive motors to access the existing motor-to-gearbox coupling arrangements, which were replaced with a coupling type better suited to the operational requirements of the stacker system.
The scope also included the manufacture and installation of large spacer plates for the floating stacker mounts. Existing shaft assemblies were pressed out, dimensionally inspected and re-machined to the required specifications before reassembly, and lubrication oil tanks were removed to allow new lubrication lines and associated connections to be installed throughout the bogie assemblies.
Following completion of the mechanical modifications, MEA carried out precision alignment of the motors, couplings, shafts and associated drive components. The upgraded bogies were then transported back to WICET, where MEA provided site installation, final alignment and commissioning support to ensure the assemblies were correctly integrated into the coal stacker system.
